I have long considered sharing my thoughts on this topic, but struggled to find the right words. Now, I’m compelled to write this article, hoping that my personal experience will resonate with others who may be searching for inspiration and guidance.
Let me ask the following. Have you ever felt rejected by those you care about, wondering why life is unfolding this way? Do you struggle to fit in or feel like you don’t belong in this world?
Always keep in mind that the world around you is the problem, not you. You may feel like you don’t fit in because you’re called to something higher. As the Bible says, ‘Many are called, but few are chosen.’
If you’re facing rejection, trust that God has placed you exactly where you need to be right now. God sees beyond surface-level appearances and actions, focusing instead on the desires of your heart (1 Samuel 16:7).
Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7
To those who have lost loved ones, faced rejection, and felt abandoned, I see you. I know the pain of losing everything and everyone dear to you can be overwhelming, leaving a gaping void that seems impossible to fill. In this darkest moment, find strength and take heart.
God sees every tear, every sorrow, and is always working, even when it’s challenging to see. Our deepest pain can be a catalyst for awakening to God’s plan. Though heartbreak may seem unbearable, know that God has not forsaken you. He is near and cares.
Our limited human understanding can’t always grasp God’s plans. Occasionally, He separates us from certain people or groups to fulfill a greater purpose. Some relationships can hinder our growth, even if they’re challenging to let go of. This includes friends and family members who may have been distracting us from God’s path.
God’s decision to separate us from them isn’t a reflection of His love for them, but rather His knowledge of our entire journey. In these moments, His will takes precedence over ours. The truth is, it is better to be where God wants you to be than where you think you should be. When I thought of the best way to explain this topic, I thought of Abraham and Joseph in the Old Testament. God separates people so that they can live out His clear plan for their lives.
What We can Learn from the Story of Abraham
The story of Abraham is a testament to survival and faith. Born into a family that practiced idolatry, Abraham was initially influenced by his father, Terah, and participated in worshipping carved images. This was during a time when idol worship was prevalent in Ur, Mesopotamia, where Abraham and his family lived.
When Abraham questioned the worship of powerless carved images, God saw the goodness in his heart and intervened. This was during King Nimrod’s reign in Mesopotamia, where he enforced idol worship. Abraham’s skepticism grew as he realized the uselessness of these idols. He sought the true Creator of the heavens and earth. Abraham’s refusal to participate in idol worship in his hometown led to hatred and rejection from his people.
A pivotal moment in Abraham’s story occurred when God instructed him to leave his homeland for Canaan (Genesis 12:1-9). During their first encounter, God renamed Abram to Abraham, meaning ‘The father is elevated.’ Abraham trusted God’s guidance over his family’s lifeless idols, sparking a journey of faith and obedience that marked the beginning of his redemption.
Abraham’s story demonstrates that God values heart intentions over outward appearances. When we align our hearts with God’s will, we capture His attention. Abraham’s courage to defy idolatry and follow his Creator remains a powerful example, especially in today’s world where conformity to worldly desires is prevalent (1 John 2:15-17, Romans 12:2). By rejecting worldly norms, Abraham followed God’s will, leading him to relocate and deepen his connection with his Creator. Ultimately, Abraham’s obedience proved profoundly beneficial.
The Story of Joseph is another Valuable Lesson
The story of Joseph, Jacob’s son, is a powerful illustration of the destructive nature of envy and jealousy. However, it also beautifully demonstrates the truth that God can turn even the most challenging circumstances into a work of good for those who trust in Him.
Joseph was chosen by God for greatness, destined to excel beyond his brothers. What set him apart was not only his kind heart and good deeds, but also his motivations with integrity and humility. Moreover, Joseph possessed a remarkable gift, which was the ability to interpret dreams that would become reality.
The Bible records a series of dreams in which Joseph saw himself elevated above his brothers, foreshadowing his future success. These dreams were only a testament to God’s favour in his life, not a reflection of personal ambition. However, his brothers perceived these dreams as further evidence of their father Jacob’s unfair favouritism towards Joseph, exemplified by the gift of a multicoloured coat.
This fuelled their envy and resentment, leading them to plot against him. They sold him to a caravan of traders bound for Egypt, where he was sold to Potiphar, a high-ranking officer of the Pharaoh.
Despite being reduced to servitude, Joseph demonstrated remarkable resilience and faith. Ironically, his brothers’ decision to sell him into slavery was a pivotal part of God’s plan, transporting him to the exact place where he would fulfill his destiny. Since Joseph wasn’t accepted by his brothers, God created a new path for him.
Had Joseph remained with his family, he wouldn’t have brought them glory, given the circumstances that unfolded after his departure. Although Joseph’s journey was marked by hardship, his transformation from an unknown Hebrew boy in Canaan to the second-in-command in Egypt demonstrates God’s power to elevate anyone to greatness.
For years, Joseph was separated from his family, unaware of their fate. Yet, he harboured no resentment or animosity towards his brothers, despite their betrayal. Joseph’s decision to forgive and accept them demonstrates why God values character over appearance.
God’s plan for Joseph involved isolation and uncertainty, but ultimately led him to greatness. Separated from his family and alone in a foreign land, Joseph remained devoted to God’s will and unwavering in his faith. His ascension to greatness was a direct result of his trust in God’s plan.
Conclusion
The stories of Abraham and Joseph demonstrate how God separates individuals from others to fulfill His purposes. You are precisely where you need to be today, as part of God’s plan. For those who trust in God, everything works out for their good. If you’re feeling lonely, neglected, or like you don’t fit in, take heart. God says you’re special and chosen. When He selects someone for a greater purpose, He selects the best, even if it means setting them apart.
The world we live in today is plagued by sin and evil. But when you find yourself unable to conform to these vices, rejoice in the fact that God has set you apart. Even Jesus taught us that His kingdom is not of this world (John 18:36). God’s decision to isolate you, just like Abraham, shows that His plan is timeless and unchanging. Despite differences in generations, human nature remains the same.
Don’t feel like there’s something wrong with you just because the world doesn’t accept you. The problem lies with the world, not with you. God’s acceptance is all that truly matters, and He will always accept you.
If the world turned its back on and condemned Jesus, who was perfect and had no sin, why should we think we won’t be rejected? Though you may feel alone right now, trust that this is all for a reason. One day, you’ll see that the journey was worth the effort.
